Make sure to enter 'NHS' after your name when you book so Leeds Baroque Orchestra know who you are, and enjoy a fantastic free concert by a fantastic collection of musicians and singers!

After over a year with no performance, or even rehearsal opportunities, members of Leeds Baroque came together at the end of June to film their first “virtual concert”.

Strict Covid protocols and an ever changing regime of legislation and guidance made planning difficult, but imaginative programming by director Peter Holman MBE, devised 'A Portrait of Henry Purcell'. The repertoire chosen could be accomplished with the limited forces allowed at the time of recording (6 singers and 13 instrumentalist) with little or no compromise on the scale of the performance, each work required. Having lived through the Great Plague of London (1665-66) it is perhaps appropriate that his music should be chosen for Leeds Baroque to take its first steps out of the current pandemic.

Recorded in The University of Leeds Clothworkers Centenary Concert Hall, with the help of the School of Music’s Technical Team, the programme features a range of Purcell’s output during the last 15 years of his life. Illustrating the variety of his work the programme includes one of his best known sonatas, the Chaconne in G minor, the original version of Nymphs and shepherds come away, and music for the Theatre and the Chapel Royal.

The "In Concert" will be introduced by Peter Holman MBE, and followed by an audience-panel Q&A session, where audience members will be offered the opportunity to quiz members of the orchestra and choir.

This is an online event hosted on Zoom Webinar – the audience will have an opportunity to submit questions before and during the event, as part of the Panel Q&A that follows “In Concert”
