The Concert
Miracles and myths abound, from Béla Bartók’s surreal ballet to Jean Sibelius’ Finnish landscape – plus, a captivating new piece by Golfam Khayam.
The Music
Syrinx attempts to escape the god Pan in Claude Debussy’s evocative work for solo flute. Luonnotar is about the very origins of the earth, while Claude Vivier’s Orion depicts the mysteries of outer space. Khayam’s Je ne suis pas une fable à conter is based on a poem by Ahmad Shamlou, one of the most iconic cultural figures in Iran.
Haydn’s spritely Symphony No 39 is delicate and determined, light but vigorous. The Miraculous Mandarin, meanwhile, defies death in one of Bartók’s most thrilling scores.
The Performers
Barbara Hannigan sings with and conducts the LSO at its full, magnificent capacity. She is joined by Gareth Davies, LSO Principal Flute.
